Instructed by Joshua Lund

About the Class

Join us for the first ever "Pittsburgh in Spanish" course. Our instructor, Joshua Lund, will lead us through twelve weeks of exploratory Spanish-language speaking experiences. Combining technical language practice with destination-focused class sessions, students will use the city as their campus and engage with language-learning in the everyday. We’ll equip students with a digital handbook of learning tools and meet bi-weekly for instruction and peer-driven practice sessions. More than a class, think of it as an active, roaming language learning community.

We are working to arrange a partnership with Amizade Service Learning who is bringing a service learning group from Bolivia to Pittsburgh. The plan is to offer graduates of the Saxifrage course the opportunity to work and speak alongside the Bolivian students during their stay in Pittsburgh. If it happens as planned, students will be able to participate in this exchange to varying levels of commitment depending on interest and availability. By looking forward to this hosting engagement, we hope to give students a serious motivation to hone their language skills. This is an optional post-course opportunity for students and is not part of the course fee.

About the Instructor

Joshua Lund has his PhD from the University of Minnesota. He is an Associate Professor in the University of Pittsburgh's Hispanic Languages & Literature department. Josh has an interdisciplinary approach, but focuses especially on Latin American culture, film, and writing.

Times and Location

Language learning takes time, so our course will meet twice weekly. Class and destination sessions are every Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 at a roaming series of locations. Speaking and practice sessions are every Thursday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 at Commonplace Voluto Coffee (location subject to change, we might try and do these sessions over dinner).

Skill Level

Beginner to Advanced-Intermediate. Because this course is more activity-based than curriculum-based, we are able to invite a broad range of skill levels to join us.

Registration Details:

We went out of our way to hire the best possible instructor to both teach and develop the concept for this original course. Because of this unique effort and the event-based nature of the course, we are charging more than our other courses. Tuition is $649. Class registration is limited to 12. Purchase your half-tuition ticket now and we'll bill for the rest later.

Open Cost Analysis

Instructor Wages: 77%; Classroom Costs: 6%; Administrative Wages: 7%; Learning Supplies: 10%

(Open Cost publishing is a new effort in transparency by the Saxifrage School to ensure students know what their money is being spent on when they sign up for courses. The “Tuition” moniker implies that funds are spent on instruction, but this is increasingly not the case at many schools. We want to change that.)
